The Finch Formerly Known As Gold

Flying fickle finger of fame

Jeebus. Yesterday the meter on this site was running, if not 18 times the speed of light, certainly faster than it's ever run before. And instead of the usual 350 or so for a Monday, the spreadsheet shows a startling 1699.

I could, I suppose, characterize this event as yet another step on the long journey from Completely Unknown to Deeply Obscure, but once this flurry passes (and that CNN goofup falls off Blogdex, where it climbed briefly to #51), I'm gearing up for resettlement in a moderately-priced area of Oblivion Heights.

For those of you who were here, however briefly, on a day more than twice as busy as any I've ever seen — the previous record for 24 hours here is 728 — thank you for making possible something entirely unexpected: a veritable Instalanche without any participation by InstaPundit. In the immortal words of Marx: That's the most unheard-of thing I ever heard of.

Regular programming will resume shortly.

Congratulations on well deserved hits. That was quite a find and I was glad I ran by your site early morning so I could be one of the first on the "link to Dustbury" bandwagon.

I've been hitting record visits lately too and haven't had an Instlanche since I can remember. It's more of an accomplisment without one.

I'll get over it. I mean, I've been at this stand for the better part of seven years; I don't have all the tracking data, but I don't think I had 1699 hits for the entire first year. Of course, the site is much larger today - over a thousand pages versus a couple of dozen - but still, it's startling to see that many people reading this stuff.

Incidentally, it's up to #27 on Blogdex now; another site with the same pic (so far as I know, he was up with it before I was) is at #16.

~sigh~ the usual 350 or so. That's more than 3 times my usual. Congratulations. You deserve it. But I can't help being a little jealous every time I read about other blogs getting daily visits in the hundreds.

Actually, you probably have as much readership as I do, if not more; I have all these non-blog pages which catch hits, and most days they account for two-thirds of the site traffic. That leaves me with just over 100 actual blog readers.

You track your stats?

Narcissist.

And these grapes I'm eating are much sweeter than yours, I'm sure.

I have more experience at whine-making. :)

Set. Game. Match.

Posted by: Vickie at 7:04 AM on 5 February 2003

Don't you just HATE it when you hit "post" as you're reading your obvious, stupid error.

Much like watching a fine piece of jewelry slip right through the sewar grate just out of your grasp.

That would be "Game. Set. Match."

AARRRRGHHH.

I wouldn't have caught it; the only thing I know about tennis is that love means nothing. :)

Pass the grape juice.

STOP!

Posted by: Vickie at 8:00 AM on 5 February 2003

Kevin, over to you.

Posted by: CGHill at 8:05 AM on 5 February 2003

Naw, you're doing fine.

Minored in Schadenfreude, did you?

Is that anything like Liebfraumilch?

Posted by: Kevin McGehee at 2:32 PM on 5 February 2003

Oh, those hits are from my "Best Internet Essays of 2003" link to your "The Case for Pessisism" item. I can't explain how 170 daily visitors turns into a mob at your site, however. Maybe those Raelians are at it again.

Posted by: Bill Peschel at 3:07 PM on 5 February 2003

There have been days - well, as late as 2001 - when 170 was considered heavy traffic.

Of course, back then Kevin was still on Blogspot and drinking the German equivalent of Annie Green Springs. :)

Posted by: CGHill at 3:23 PM on 5 February 2003

Boy...those Germans have a word for *everything*.

I'll have you know that in 2001 I still had yet to darken Blogger's door -- er, upload port.

I think.

Posted by: Kevin McGehee at 5:46 AM on 6 February 2003

Port. Again with the wine references.

Obviously I don't drink enough.

Posted by: CGHill at 6:04 AM on 6 February 2003

"Obviously I don't drink enough."

If this thread keeps up, I'm sure that'll be remedied.

What was it W. C. Fields said? "A woman drove me to drink, and I never stopped to thank her."
