19 February 2003Pennsylvania 6-5 millionIf you thought area-code changes were fast and furious, you ain't seen nothin' yet. Three of the Baby Bells are complaining that voice-over-IP calling where you send your voice as bits through the Net will eat up the pool of available phone numbers even faster than cell phones and pagers and fax. The most likely scenario, ten years down the pike: area codes grow to four digits, and telephone numbers to eight. We'll get used to it eventually, though I worry about how I'll explain "867-5309" to Jenny's children. This revelation may be a bit too shocking for Center Harbor, NH, whose residents up to only 1995 were utilizing only four digits to call within town (many of whom were actually still "dialing" as opposed to "pressing"). Posted by: Vickie at 5:53 AM on 20 February 2003I would like it known that I did not screw up (this time) and hit the send button twice. Some wacky "internal server" message came up and said it was unable to process my request. So I said, "OH YEAH?? Well, I'll show YOU who won't process my request" and I hit it again. So there :) Posted by: Vickie at 5:55 AM on 20 February 2003I wish it were merely "wacky" instead of "irritating as all hell," but this particular MySQL box seems to pick random intervals to error out. I did post a notice in the Usage Notes last month, to the effect that "Error 500 during comment posting is probably not your fault, and the comment probably did post." I suspect that this problem is inherent in the way this particular host operates its server farm, and, well, I'm paid up through the end of the year, so I'm not going to move. Yet. |
