20 May 2003Open season on mascotsThe Minuteman may be safe, for now; but what UMass giveth, Ole Miss taketh away. Colonel Reb, the old Southern (make that Suthun) gentleman who represents the University of Mississippi, may be headed for a makeover; Ole Miss AD Pete Boone says the Colonel is "an 18th-century person," and obviously we can't have such people hanging around in the twenty-first. Then again, it's not like the Colonel is waving a Confederate flag or anything. (Via Tongue Tied) Posted at 2:02 PM to Almost Yogurt"Ole Miss AD Pete Boone says the Colonel is 'an 18th-century person'..." Errrr... The Southern rebellion, from which one may presume "Colonel Reb" gets his name, occurred in the 19th century. But I guess an athletic director, having most likely a degree in jockology, wouldn't know which century is which. Not even in present-day 2103.
