8 March 2004Swimming to Long Island SoundApparently that was Spalding Gray they pulled out of the East River over the weekend. Gray, who hadn't been seen since January, had a long history of depression, and presumably committed suicide. In an interview in 1997, he had suggested an epitaph for himself: "An American Original: Troubled, Inner-Directed and Cannot Type." I'd swipe that for myself, except that I can type.
