The Finch Formerly Known As Gold

On the eighth day, He chuckled

Bruce asks:

Why did God put most of the oil under a bunch of Muslims?

It's a manifestation of the divine sense of humor. And the punchline? The wasteland briefly known as Palestine, which the Israelis built into an actual country to the general irritation of Arab Muslims worldwide, is the one place in the Middle East that doesn't have any oil.

And one could consider it also a manifestation of the divine sense of mercy, since were it not for oil, the entire Arab world would be about as much of an economic power as Kansas City.

Kansas City, Kansas.

Yeah, but who needs black gold when you have millions in American economic aid keeping your economy from imploding?

Or am I misreading your implication that if the Arabs weren't such idiots then they too could built a thriving economy on a bunch of arid rock?

There once was a thriving economy in that region, built on trade. The Arabs used to be the envy of the world when it came to navigation -- taught those upstart Spanish and Portugese a thing or two.

Arabs, generally speaking, aren't dumb — at least, not in any way specific to their ethnicity. I think it's safe to say, though, that in recent years, there have been some remarkably bad decisions made by Arab governments. Picking fights with Israel, for example, has generally proven itself to be incredibly stupid and unrewarding, but it gets favorable press from anti-Jewish nudniks in Old Europe. Putting all their economic eggs in a single petroleum-powered basket is nearly as dumb, especially since your friendly neighborhood oil cartel is no longer capable of dictating prices.

In terms of return on investment, the $2 billion a year we drop on Egypt, for instance, could probably be flushed down the toilet with comparable results.

Placing oil under the feet of Arabs has the effect of keeping Israel in the center of world history.

Were it not for the rich Arab nations funding a relentless campaign against Israel, the Jewish nation would have settled into a quiet prosperous existance like that of Switzerland.

If I were the Almighty and wanted world attention on Israel at this time in history, I would give her enemies a large underserved resource critical to the economy of the rest of the world.
