30 August 2005Powerball is comingIt won't be right away, but the Oklahoma lottery, most likely in 2006, will be joining the Powerball combine, the 28th state to do so. This will give Oklahomans an essentially-infinitesimal shot at winning implausibly-huge prizes without having to drive to Kansas or Missouri to buy tickets. (Why are you looking at me like that? Do I look like the kind of person who would drive a couple hundred miles for a shot at a hundred million dollars?) Posted at 8:00 AM to SoonerlandThe best example of the foolishness of the lottery is in the action of lottery officials. They are constantly raising the odds so that the jackpots become ever larger. With smaller, more frequent jackpots, people don't tend to play as much. That's right, lottery customers tend not to play because people are winning too much. Posted by: Ravenwood at 12:12 PM on 30 August 2005If the odds against winning $50,000 are more than 60 times better than the odds against winning $3 million, doing the math tells us that it's better to go for the smaller prize but smaller prizes are not the stuff of which dreams are made. (Although $50k would make quite a dent in my debt.) Posted by: Don at 4:06 PM on 30 August 2005ahhh but first we must define .... vice. Without reservation EVERYONE has vices ... some just more acceptable by the masses than others.
