25 May 2006I suppose I should feel betterA fiftysomething Welsh woman has been cleared of an indecent-exposure charge after a male neighbor videotaped her sunbathing nude in her back yard and took the tape to the police. The magistrates ruled that she did not intend to cause "harm or distress" and dismissed the charge; the woman said she was relieved by the ruling, and was planning to move to another presumably less-prudish neighborhood. What strikes me as odd about this is that the incident, as it were, took place last July: it took them ten months to rule on this case? And I thought American courts were overloaded. (Via Fark.com.) Incidentally, the Beeb has posted segments (blacked out as "necessary") of the video as aired on BBC-TV; the television report suggests that there were a couple of instances where the lady in question actually ventured out of her garden, and it was one of those instances which suggested to the neighbor that maybe he should bring out the camcorder. I'm pretty sure that in the US we'd have prosecuted the movie-maker as a peeping tom. |
