10 July 2006Bau wauJohn Owen Butler didn't much like this house:
Bauhaus? In Oklahoma? As my 19 year old daughter would say, ewwwh.
So he really won't like this one:
In Crown Heights, at 40th and Shartel. (Not my photo; this came with the draft report on Oklahoma City's Historic Preservation efforts, circa 2002. Except for tree growth and such, it looks about the same today.) And you know, I like pointy Tudor revivals as much as the next guy, but we're awash in the darn things. Posted at 9:02 AM to City SceneOh, but this is Streamline Art Deco. It's got some ornamentation and a few curves to it. That other one looked like someone forgot and put the drywall on the outside. Posted by: Michael Bates at 10:16 AM on 10 July 2006When they tore down the old Muskogee Central High, they left a remnant in place that became the Muskogee Little Theater. That other building eerily resembles that shard of Central High. I agree with Bates, this one has some style. I like it -- streamline art deco has curves. Bauhaus, to my memory, doesn't. Posted by: John Owen Butler at 4:07 PM on 10 July 2006I've always liked that house. Posted by: J. M. Branum at 7:35 PM on 11 July 2006 |
