19 July 2006It's hotter than you thinkThe guy on the NPR station keeps announcing the predicted high for today as "middle to high 100s," which comes off, at least to me, as scary: I hear that, and it sounds like somewhere between 150 and 199, despite the fact that not even in Al Gore's most fervid fantasies has it ever been as high as 140. (The current world record is more like 136.) The National Weather Service says today's high will be 106. Posted at 8:44 AM to Weather or NotFunny, it feels more like 666 out there. Posted by: Jennifer at 1:02 PM on 19 July 2006It's 102° at 1:15 PM here, and the Yahoo! Weather widget says the projected high is - I kid you not - 109°. And I think you meant "fears" instead of "fantasies" above, or at least would hope you don't think the former veep is actually cheering for global warming... Posted by: Matt at 1:18 PM on 19 July 2006Fantasies are not always, um, good. I don't think he'd encourage it, particularly, but there is this tendency among humans (I have it at least as bad as anyone I know) to want to be in a position to say "I told you so." My wife just reported that the bank clock not far from home was reading 100° when she passed it on the way home from work. The only consolation is that it's a bank clock, which around here at least means notoriously inaccurate. If by "inaccurate" one means, "doesn't observe the policy of officially denying there's ever been a temp over 99.9° anywhere in metro Atlanta. Posted by: McGehee at 4:38 PM on 19 July 2006Bank clocks around here aren't usually too far off the mark, and they have no qualms about triple-digit temperatures. (And darn few of them mention Celsius, as it happens.) Gwendolyn has a button which, when pushed, declares the "ambient" temperature from somewhere in front of her windshield; it's usually within a degree or two of the bank I just passed, which of course could just as easily mean that they're comparably inaccurate. 150 - 199??? Egads!! We went swimming today. The water temp. was 93. We were hot WHILE we were swimming - and I'm not just talkin' about our appearance. Posted by: Jan at 10:12 PM on 19 July 2006 |
