Not the fortunate ones

“Don’t sort your socks,” suggests Donna:

Keep them in a huge mess in your sock drawer. It becomes a little early morning puzzle to find two that match … and the emptier the drawer becomes, the more rewarding it is when you do finally find two that match.

In the early morning — by which I mean “anything before ten-thirty” — I am quite incapable of making judgment calls on sock colors, and among the ten pairs in the drawer (as of the completion of weekend laundry) there are really only four and a half distinct colors. (The really dark blue and the really faded black are hard to tell apart under a CFL bulb that won’t warm up for several minutes yet.)

And there’s one possible drawback:

I often look like early Cyndi Lauper because I give up rather easily … but it’s still a fun challenge.

I am quite fond of Cyndi Lauper, but I have no urge to look like her at any age.

The famous violinist, Kennedy, has as his signature look perpetually mismatched socks. Maybe it’s deliberate. Maybe he can’t be bothered. Or maybe he just isn’t a morning person. But, seems if you do it with enough conviction, you can make any fashion faux pas work for you.

“but I have no urge to look like [Cyndi Lauper] at any age.”

And for that, we are grateful.

I remember reading somewhere – and this may be one of those urban legend things – that Einstein supposedly estimated how much time out of a person’s life were spent caring for socks (buying them, washing them, darning them – this being the days when you actually darned socks rather than just throwing them out) and concluded it was too much time, and never wore them the rest of his life.

Is this International Socks Day or something and no one told me? Two shoe posts in a day would not surprise, but two sock posts do.

Actually, those were written about 48 hours apart; there was no compelling reason to release them both the same day, but things get moved up and down the schedule for reasons I don’t always understand, which disturbs me somewhat since they’re ostensibly my reasons in the first place.

At the moment, I have three items in the can, awaiting their moment in the sun, or at least without the lid.

Rest assured that if you wear a mismatched pair today, you’ll find that you have an identical pair still in the drawer.
