We’re unJacked
So far, this much is known:
- KKNG, Tyler’s country outlet at 93.3, has displaced KOJK, which was running Jack FM at 97.3.
- There’s still something vaguely country going on at 93.3, but it’s clearly a case of stunting, and they’re redirecting people to 97.3.
This would suggest that something other than country will be going in, but so far there are no clues.
I can’t say I’m exactly surprised that Tyler bade farewell to Jack: they’ve never climbed much over a 1 share. The only thing I found in the FCC Daily Digest was a decision to allow KWTV to abandon channel 9 in the name of better local reception: their signal will appear only on channel 39 once the tech stuff is done.

I guess I can keep an ear out for a 93.3 changeover, but this makes me sad. The Spy is back and I really appreciate it, but it was nice to have something to swap back and forth with on the dial while commuting.

If it had bailed even a couple of years ago I would have missed it, but the whole radio-as-iPod-on-shuffle thing gets old so quickly when you have to listen to it on a regular basis.

I’m still hearing a simulcast on both 93.3 and 97.3. The Tylers have registered domain names 933timfm.com and timfm933.com. Could this point to perhaps another variety hits format of some kind?
The legal ID is currently combined for the two stations: KKNG Newcastle, KOJK Blanchard. The legal ID is running a bit off schedule., sometimes at close to ten minutes after the top of the hour.
I missed the original classic country that KKNG started with, and think it could bring up 97.3′s ratings over what Jack FM was bringing in. I can get in 97.3 quite well at home near the fairgrounds, but very poorly at work near Quail Springs Mall. 93.3 comes in well at work, so they may lose some north side listeners due to poor reception. The north side listeners can still hear some classic country on KXY 96.1, and without the static of 97.3.

Well, Tim would certainly fit well among the likes of Jack and Bob and Ed (Albuquerque) and Ted (Fairbanks) and Abe (Springfield, Illinois — think about it) and Ben (Philadelphia — ditto), and Tyler wouldn’t have to pay licensing fees for the name, but I smell backlash, this being the 15th anniversary year of a rather heinous act by a fellow named Tim(othy).
Then again, domains are cheap, and herrings are often red.

I’m kinda thinking red herring myself. I remember in the not too distant past when many thought that 94.7 would be switching to KTOK-FM, when that particular format adjustment ended up being just another attempt to go after KATT.

I am going to miss JACK. I listened to it exclusively. The only problem I had with it was the mix was way too much Classic Rock. The National JACK feed was a lot more POP. Our JACK never played Madonna for example and OMG she was 80s if anyone was! I think their dickering with the playlist is what killed them.

It appears that 93.3 is now Jake FM, playing new country. The Tylers turned it on at midnight 10/14/2010. Yawn. Another country station. At least they have returned to true classic country using 97.3, though it’ll be no match for KXXY’s 100,000 watt signal.

To borrow a Shania-ism, this don’t impress former KKNG staffer K. C. Sheperd much:
