Aging gracefully

Stacy McCain was kind enough to reproduce a photo of a teenage Ann Althouse, which picture was discussed briefly at lunch today, with the following observation offered by someone other than myself:

“We were all cute as teenagers. Even I was.”

Well, I wasn’t. Not even Mary Quant fake eyelashes would have helped me. On the upside, this means perhaps I haven’t deteriorated all that much in forty-odd years. (Then again, neither has Althouse.)

    Well, I wasn’t.

I’d say I wasn’t, but that would be calling my sainted mother a liar.

I can pretty definitively say that, however “cute” I may be, I am actually cuter at 41 than I was as a teen. I had a long, bad, awkward period. (Not helped by having braces, and my parents’ vision-care plan only allowing the choice of one of three styles of glasses frames, none of which were flattering). I also got my hair cut short and wound up, as Maurice Chevalier would say, “frisee comme une mouton.” NOT a good look.

If my mother hadn’t hidden my 7th grade school photos, I would have burned them.
