Another girlmobile

Motor Trend calls this one for the ladies in their New Car Buyer’s Guide. It’s the Volkswagen Eos ragtop convertible, and, says whoever was in charge of the one-line summary: “Your daughter will love it.”

Well, maybe. My daughter is not so BFFy with VW these days, having driven her Jetta into one of metro Kansas City’s craters d’avenue, following which she was presented with a repair bill that made her nose bleed. On the upside, she’s surely grateful for no longer having to deal with some of the craptacular vehicles from her past, including an early-90s Oldsmobile Bravada whose doors apparently could be opened only with burglar’s tools or divine intervention.

Some cars that wind up branded “girlmobiles” come as no surprise: Geo Metro ragtop, Toyota Paseo…

Others moreso: V-6 entry-model F-bodies and ‘Stangs in the ’90s, as well as the contemporaneous non-turbo FWD Eclips/Laser/Talon.

I’ve occasionally heard the V6 Mustang disparaged (I guess) as a “Secretary Special.”

In defense of the ladies, they generally don’t seem disposed toward soaking a $2000 car in $4000 worth of bling. And the sort of guy who’ll put dubs on a Civic, thereby making it handle like a hedgehog on a sugar rush, is the sort of guy who worries about whether cars are sufficiently masculine. Better he should worry about whether his car is sufficiently drivable.
