You are not allowed to notice such things

Tani Cantil-SakauyeIn a fairly-blatant example of contemporary doubleplusungoodthink, California Assemblyman Charles Calderon (D-Whittier) apparently got it into his head that Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye (photo to right) is sorta hawt, and was foolish enough to say so within earshot of Senator Noreen Evans (D-Santa Rosa), who immediately cranked out a nastygram criticizing Calderon for saying such “harmful and detrimental” things about the Chief Justice, who’d never done anything to deserve that kind of treatment.

Good thing for Calderon that Nicole Parra ran up against term limits, say I.

Last time I checked, being called hot was a compliment. Could it be Sen. Evans looks like the southern end of a north-travelling cow?
This follows my theory that the women who scream about how horribly skinny models are are the ones who have their own zip codes for their asses.

In my opinion — that and $5.99 will get you Combo Meal #2 at participating locations for a limited time only, tax not included — Senator Evans has no bovine characteristics.

Back when I was in grad school, I dressed up nicely one day (instead of the usual jeans and t-shirts) because I was giving a presentation.

One of my male colleagues (fellow grad student) saw me in the hall, exclaimed that I “looked nice”

And then he immediately apologized. There are some sectors of the world where it is drummed into people that even NOTICING a woman’s appearance is bad and wrong. It’s a zero-tolerance sort of thing, I guess: because some people are apparently too dim to recognize that there’s a difference between “You look nice today” and “wow, you have really huge boobs,” any kind of comment is considered suspicious and wrong.

    It’s sad, really.

That could be quite an “oops” if the Chief Justice Herself doesn’t mind to be called “nice and attractive”…

The lovely Amy Alkon has said, regarding the Evans letter:

[W]hat we really need, along with take your daughter to work day, is wear a bag over your head to work day.

A friend of mine, rather a lot of years ago, put together a short story about a species of humanoids almost exactly like ours — except that after a girl goes through puberty, she becomes increasingly translucent, and eventually vanishes completely: there are still weddings, of course, but all the dresses appear to be empty.

At the time, I had no idea this might really have been a political allegory.

@Charles: Senator Evans has no bovine characteristics.

I beg to differ: her ‘rant’ was udderly ridiculous.
