My brother recently lamented: “I can’t get my brain to ‘turn off’ at night.”

I think that’s a fairly common problem. (And probably runs in my family; that’s the best description I can give for the nights I can’t sleep).

I normally get up at least once a night, but I’ve found a beer or two before bed eliminates the interruption.

I can’t take sleep meds — I even refuse to take antihistamines at bedtime because they’ll still have me groggy and befuddled well into the morning.

Actually, I find a big thick book with slow-moving prose helps a lot. Or even just a book on a topic that has nothing to do with whatever it is I am working on or worrying about in my daily life. That’s probably why I have about 5 times as many books on history than I have on ecology on my “read for fun” shelves.
