Splendor on the grass

Spring is darn near sprung, and Splendid, previously known more for its flirty shirts, has introduced a shoe line appropriate for the season.

Lustful by Splendid

Heirloom Shoe, their local retail outlet (NW 44th and Western), is promoting this particular style on their Facebook page, and a friend expressed some enthusiasm for it, which is more than enough reason for me to put it up here. This color is called River Rock; there’s also a Rainbow version, both sitting on this 4½-inch high woven-bamboo wedge. The price, at $109, is not eye-popping. And I swear, I’d already started on this post long before I discovered that Splendid calls this shoe “Lustful.”

    It is not?

Compared to some of the godawfully expensive stuff I’ve put up here before, not even close.

Sometimes, however, fortune smiles upon us.

Godawfully-expensive stuff oyu put up before is in a different category: it’s filed under “crazy artifacts”. But this claims to be a wearable summer wedge sandal. As these go, its form/construction is not inventive: wedges + ankle strap has been around since 1940, same for knot in lieu of a bow; stripes has been around forever, white/blue combo – even before that.
I’ll give them a plus for non-slippery upholstered insole and another – for an accurately stitched on tiny leather “belt” detail and a clean-line buckle. Which would be, sadly, negated by the ungodly height and ugly bulbous shape of the platform – which makes then practically unwearable. Yes, one can pose in them effectively, but make 3 steps – and you are down on a sidewalk with broken ankle and in need of a knight in shiny armor…if that was the purpose all alone than yes, $110+change is a bargain price.

Otherwise, a high price on a market day in NY street fair should be $35, tops.

“Lustful?” It looks sort of innocent to me.

I suspect it’s a matter of context. After a long winter — and all winters seem long, unless you’re in some place like San Diego — I’d be at least slightly provoked by seeing a pair of these being worn at [name of store I probably can’t afford but go to anyway].

…and thus, once again, the old maxim is proven: “men love with their eyes…”

We also think with, um, unexpected hardware.
