Disrupting the limbic system

It’s, well, a limb, and it should not be there. It wouldn’t be there were it not for the Tuesday-night thunderstorms. This is how it looked on Wednesday:

One dead tree limb not quite coming down

The black line starting in the northwest corner is, of course, the power line. Note that the free-standing (ha!) limb isn’t actually touching the line, but it’s pulling down one that is.

This sucker being too unwieldy for me to wield, I put a call out to the neighborhood, and currently it’s in several pieces on the curb. I really need to buy me a chainsaw.

(As usual, the picture is shrunk for this column, but is rebigulated on Flickr.)

Thankfully, my dropped limbs didn’t land on any power lines. And I need a chainsaw too.

You shouldn’t touch that. Great way to get electrocuted. You need to call the power company and tell them there is a tree limb hanging on a line and it’s dangerous. Power lines and tree limbs scare the bejesus out of me.

I did in fact call them; they blew me off, on the basis that it wasn’t a hazard yet. Perhaps they knew that the promised Wednesday night thunderboomers were not going to materialize.

Anyway, it’s down, thanks to some well-insulated neighbors who clearly understand this stuff better than I do.

Whew! Although even well-insulated I’m still kinda scared that they undertook the mission LOL.

I guess I got lucky? The storms didn’t hit down here, or didn’t hit as hard, and my dead redbud didn’t splinter and take out the power or cable line like I was fearing it would.

I really need to find a skilled person who can take down a fifteen-foot redbud without snapping either the cable or power line, and who can do it without damaging the nearby fence. (Or, for that matter, having a wayward limb come through my bedroom window.)
