OKCTalk is reporting that WinCo Foods, a Boise-based discount chain, has signed the papers on three Oklahoma City-area locations, the nearest to me at 39th and I-44, on what used to be a hotel site.

The chain dates to 1967, when it was Waremart; the WinCo name, they say, comes from “Winning Company.”

Discussion at OKCTalk seems to boil down to “Hurray, something that isn’t Walmart!”

My experience at WinCo is that it’s every bit as pleasant as Walmart. Though not as inexpensive.

“it’s every bit as pleasant as Walmart. Though not as inexpensive.”

Best example of damning with faint praise I’ve seen in a while. (I don’t hate Walmart for political reasons; I hate it because of the awful way people behave there when it’s crowded.)

When my wife and I lived in Fairbanks in the mid- to late-’90s there were those (including us, yes) who complained about the lack of a Wal-Mart (as they were styled in those days) up yonder.

Then one day I realized that we didn’t need a Wal-Mart in Fairbanks; we had Kmart, where the prices weren’t as low but the service was just as bad.

Two things: now Fairbanks has a Walmart but no Kmart. And since leaving Fairbanks what my wife and I miss is Fred Meyer.
