Rather a lot of gentlemen

Sellers of hosiery had been marketing to African-American women for many years, but seldom was a black woman shown in a regular advertising series. Here, Hanes showed that it could be done without changing a thing about the campaign:

Gentlemen prefer Hanes, and that includes black gentlemen

That was late in the 1970s. Somehow, it took them a decade and a half more to get around to hiring Tina Turner:

And, you know, she would have been perfect.
