Wearing number 15

The Columbia Fireflies (formerly the Savannah Sand Gnats) of the Class A South Atlantic League, a farm club of the New York Mets, opened their 2016 season at home this evening against the GreenJackets of Augusta, Georgia.

No score through the first inning. Then in the bottom of the second:

Not bad for a 29-year-old rookie.

Here, take a look for yourself:

Damn.

The bad news is that the Savannah Sand Gnats are no longer the Savannah Sand Gnats.

Still, the Kannapolis Intimidators (previously the Piedmont Boll Weevils) continue to play in the South Atlantic.

Savannah dropped to the Coastal Plain League and won the 2016 championship as the Savannah Bananas.

The Fireflies won the opener 14-7. Tebow went 1-5 for the night; he struck out three times. Batting average is now .200, which is about 50 points better than he did in spring training.

Savannah’s new team name is a sore point for UC Santa Cruz, I imagine. That is, I bet they wanna slug ’em.

According to reports the pitcher who gave up the HR was drafted at the 666th position in the MLB draft. That is too good to look up and see if it true.

The Giants drafted Domenic Mazza in the 22nd round of the MLB June 2015 draft; being 666th overall would indeed fit there.
