Have you got yourself an occupation?

Hey, at least you’re working, right?

Sometimes, you’re surprised.

I once stopped at a local convenience store and had to shake my head at some south-of-the-border-type men who approached me saying (in an accent of course) “Work? Work?”

And I live (if you call it living) in Georgia. So, here at least, the map is accurate. Because anecdote.

I have to admit, I feel sorry for residents of those states where the map reads, “college teachers”.

I saw lots of south-of-the-border types at construction sites in, um, North Carolina, circa 2007.

Note, also: the path between Immigrant-Software developer and Immigrant-Janitor is a short one. And sometimes it’s a 2-way street.

PS: More often, though, it is the wife of the new immigrant who mops floors for pay; her husband not willing to fall that low.
    I know, I’ve been there

I’m an IT guy by trade, who has worked in things like fast-food and inventory control when the situation demanded. Not surprising to see this sort of thing among immigrants.
