Wendy, we miss you

Well, no, she’s not gone or anything. Still, I wonder if she’s been forgotten:

From the mountains of Walla Walla, Washington to the sandy beaches of Florida, fast-food burgers are adored across the country. But while burger love is universal, different states have different ideas on what — and who — makes a great burger.

In a recent poll, Ranker asked more than 10,000 burger fans nationwide to name their favorite burger from a major fast-food establishment or restaurant chain. You can see the favorite fast-food burgers for every state below.

The United States of Burgers

No surprise here: Texas and Oklahoma (and, yes, Louisiana) respondents preferred Whataburger. Missouri opted for its homegrown Steak & Shake. (As did North Dakota. Go figure.)

But those guys in Illinois and Hawaii and Colorado don’t even have any In-N-Out Burger locations. What’s the deal?

Shame on Illinois, defecting from its Steak N Shake roots (my parents live in the town where it originated) to go for some upstart Californian newcomer….

(I guess Sonic’s burgers aren’t good enough for OK to claim them? IDK, I’ve never eaten one. Never eaten a Whataburger either, for that matter)

I have to agree with my current fellow-staters about Five Guys, though once upon a time, before I fled California, I would have favored Carl’s Jr. — which at least wins in Oregon.

Interesting that Carlito’s chain-sibling, Hardee’s, isn’t favored in any state, despite being found in more of them.

Oh, I just noticed the map also shows which burger is favored in each state.

Is it possible I’m singlehandedly responsible for Georgia’s preference?

That sounds less pretentious than you think. My mom claimed to have introduced Dr Pepper to the SC Lowcountry, and having seen her fuss at store managers. I’m inclined to believe her.

I still think the one Kroger store hereabouts that ever asked my opinion started carrying Salsa Verde Doritos because I told them last year (semi-tongue-in-cheek) their not having them was my biggest disappointment with their store.

Even now they still carry that flavor, while I can’t count on finding the full-size bags anywhere else — not even Walmart anymore.

You’d be amazed how many Coloradoans are ex-Californians.
