The story of the rest

I managed maybe three hours of sleep last night, which was about three more than I had any reason to expect; I would rate my condition as “Somewhat Less Incapacitated.”

I came this close — let’s call it 50 yards — to throwing myself upon the mercy of the ER.

I did make one bed modification: it now slants upward at an angle of about 10 degrees, head to foot. Whether this had any actual effect is presently unclear.

Are you overweight? Have a thick neck? high blood pressure? Waistline over 40 inches? Snore? Sweat at night? Wake up with headaches?

If so maybe apnea. As in the other thread, get a sleep study done. Your insurance should pay for most of it.

Then lose the weight. I went from 350 lbs to 202 lbs in about a year. Second sleep study demonstrates no sleep apnea.

The machine (which I hated) allowed me to get my energy back enough to start thinking clearly. Then I changed my diet and added exercise.

    Try everything before the drugs.

    Or not; your choice.

In my own (limited to me) highly scientific studies I learned:
-I have insomnia in two cases: if there is a reason for my conscience to wake up and when something bad beyond my control is happening to me. I.e. – life worries. Remove them – and you’ll sleep like a toddler.

-Lacking control over life worries (and who does, in our age?) I – alternatively – put myself to sleep by a) crying till my eyes were to sore to open b)drinking vast quantities of vodka (don’t touch that Absolut staff! it’s too pure, go for Finlandia) c) taking Ambien at 4am and waiting till 5am for it to start working; were too tired to wait any longer

Seriously, now: when I see that I’m not sleepy at 1 in the morning, even though my whole body is aching, I go take lukewarm shower, go outside for a brisk stroll and/or do my bills.

Some take to reading books; my rec would be either collected speeshes by Brezhnev or UN committees’ minutes.
