Just push Play

The casualty list following two days of Guitar Hero Aerosmith:

  • one broken whammy bar
  • one stuck green button
  • one wrist wrapped as a direct result of long-term game play
  • four fingers requiring alternating ice and heat to be able to unclench
  • ten packages of eye drops to re-hydrate two very dry eyes
  • three packages of AA batteries

Maybe it’s just as well I never got much past the old text adventures.

I enjoy the occasional video game, but I too pine for the evocative character of Adventure and Zork.

In The Soul of a New Machine, Tracy Kidder’s Pulitzer-Prize-winning memoir of Data General Corporation, he recounts how the designers of DG’s 32-bit Eclipse used Adventure to flush out subtle problems in their new creation. Somehow I doubt that Grand Theft Auto V: Buckets Of Blood Pouring Out Of People’s Heads would have been as suitable to that task.

Batteries, one needs an endless supply of batteries if you don’t have the rechargeable thingy and your son insists on using the usb guitar.

My fingers are still stiff, so much so it hurts to type.

I’m wondering if these are the standard four-pack of AA batteries, or something else entirely. (Of late, I’ve found myself buying 10-packs.)
