It’s yard-sign season

Quite a few of them have sprung up in my neck of the woods in the last couple of weeks, and most of them support Democrats: specifically, House District 87 candidate Dana Orwig (given a mild endorsement last time here) and Presidential candidate Barack Obama (given something even less substantial here).

In the five years I’ve lived in this particular precinct, it’s been about an even split between Democrats and Republicans, though the GOP has always trailed slightly in yard signs. It’s been suggested by some local pundits that Democrats are gaining ground here on the near-northwest side, and it wouldn’t surprise me greatly were it true. And they could pick up that House seat: it’s open this year, Trebor Worthen having retired to the private sector, and Orwig, who ran against him in 2006, is almost a known quantity by now.

I went to the Democratic headquarters and was told there were no yard signs to be had at this point :( But to keep checking. I would like to place signs in my yard for Obama, Orwig and Rice.

In 2004 someone kept stealing my Kerry sign.

I hate when people do that. For one thing, it does more damage to the side the thieves/vandals (apparently) support than to the candidate whose name is on the sign.

If you can assume that the thieves actually support anything other than, well, theft.

True — but most people will tend to overlook the possibility of mere anarchy or adolescent thuggishness.
