OMG! TXT XL8

Verizon Wireless has a Web page from which a customer can send text messages to other VZW subscribers without having to go through the pain and sorrow of actually keying it in on her cell phone.

I can see how this could be a boon. But there’s more:

Yes, you can do this

So if you’re in the habit of using real English words and you feel detached from the subculture, you can key your message into the box and have Verizon render it into txtspk 4 u.

Well, I can send text messages without using my cell phone anyway — I just originate it from an e-mail account.

Of course, it lacks the character limit so my message might end up being conveyed in pieces, and I don’t have the lolspeak transl8r…

But what can anybody expect from old Ma Bell, with her hair all up in a bun, knitting in her rocking chair?

So in other words, Verizon is allowing people to “spam” others with text messages.

I realize this is how I am very detached from the culture but I would frankly be annoyed if people started doing that to me. It seems that we are innovating more and more ways to convey more and more useless information.

(I had the experience of sitting in a waiting room yesterday next to a fellow with his text-alert-sound set VERY LOUD. He would also curse every time it went off. I almost turned to him at one point and said, “Dude…if it bugs you so much that people are texting you, just turn the thing off.”)

Oh, and what is “XL8” text speak for? Accelerate? Excellent? I was never very good at those CDB. D B S A B-Z B. type of word games.
(Oh no. I just realized that perhaps we have to blame William Steig for text speak.)
