I have used the type-in-on-a-virtual-keyboard-on-the-touch-screen option here in Georgia, variously to vote for Jefferson Davis Hogg or Larson E. Pettifogger, for various local offices.

I probably would have written-in my own name this Tuesday, had I not somehow ended up with a preference for the vice-presidential spot.

I did the absentee ballot thang yesterday, and I <a href="http://crazedpw.blogspot.com/2008/02/who-are-you-gonna-vote-for.html" rel="nofollow">reluctantly voted for McCain</a>.

I haven't been real happy with my state Representative lately, so since Kansas allows write-ins, I voted for Alfred E. Neuman.

Then you would like my polling station. It's in a school's basement, a building that was erected in 1928 with fortress-like walls and columns. The voting machines I've already mentioned; the volunteers' age is somewhere between the school's and the machines'...

We don't get write-ins here in Oklahoma. In fact, we don't even have third-party candidates for President, owing to the state's onerous ballot-access law. (Local blogger and Green Party member J. M. Branum, when he ran for the state House, had to be listed as an Independent.)

I always did like those kinda-ancient-looking machines, though: they look simultaneously high-tech and retro, clearly a project for a steampunk revival. This state switched to optical scanners more than a decade ago, and while the hardware is way beyond its shelf date by now, there's really no satisfactory substitute out there; those computerized gizmos have proven entirely too easy to hack.

I don't think here in NY we can write-in a candidate. Maybe on an affidavit ballot..not in a voting booth: they have this kinda-ancient-looking machine, with a lever .
Chaz, you have inspired me: I just spent 2 hrs studying candidates from my congressional district: oh my, I didn't even know there was a battle of passions! At least now I have an idea what awaits me at the polling station; last time all the seats/positions I was supposed to make a selection for were complete news to me.

Your take on the presidential race is refreshingly candid and honest. My husband wrote in Newt Gingrich. And he's feeling hopeful. But that's just because he's a tad odd.

While I'm pretty sure you know how I made my mark at the top of the page, my own NC ballot looked like it was cast by a person in the midst of a psychotic break. Dems here, Repubs there. Dole out, McCrory in. A girl can hope. ;-)
