This can’t be happening
Rolling Stone these days has slightly less hipster cred than Popular Science, but inasmuch as they did send me an issue in the hopes of luring me back onto the subscription rolls (hint: it won’t work), I figured I’d at least read the Singles of the Year piece, which lists a hundred records they think had some sort of impact this past year. And, I decided, if I had heard of more than four or five, there’s something seriously askew with the world.
To my horror, I discovered twelve of them in my iTunes install at work. (Current song count: 4,045.)
I guess it’s time to subscribe to PopSci.

Trini, reading this, proclaimed: “I don’t have any of those. I rock.”

I know who Beyonce is but who the hell are the rest of ‘em? I’ll stick with my “oldies but goodies” . I’m becoming a fuddy-duddy and I’m proud of it! They don’t make tunes like they did “back in the day” .

Ok, so I went through the list. I had 4 songs on it. Most of them I was like “who are these people?” I have never even heard of some of these bands(singers??). There were a couple of surprises. Jackson Browne? Dude, I love him – how did he end up on a top 100 singles list in 2008? John Mellencamp. Word! Kim and Jesse I love, but I was surprised that they would make this single since I had no idea anyone knew who they were (now is when I play uber cool, I only like bands no one else listens to!!!).
But yeah. Who are all these people?

I went down the list — I don’t actually own any of it, and I’ve actually heard *maybe* six of them. The only thing there of “song of the year” quality is Kevin Rudolf’s “Let It Rock,” and that loses points because of that Little Weasel, I mean Wayne, being on it. (Well, he calls himself Weezy…)

I may have heard more than one (Kid Rock) but couldn’t tell you which ones, if any. I don’t own any of them.

I’ve only heard one: “All Summer Long” by Kid Rock. Because they play it on the country stations, and they play it on the pop stations, and they play it on the Jack stations, and they play it on the cars with the megaphone speakers on the tops that drive up and down the streets, and they beam it directly into my fillings to tell me to visit LOLcat sites for my coded mission information….
Did I say that last one out loud? They say it is classified.
