And not a shred of arugula, either
No doubt about it, this sounds pretty darn good on a cold winter day:
They ordered a house specialty, a Chili Half-Smoke — a quarter-pound half pork and beef smoked sausage on a steamed bun with mustard, onions and chili sauce. They also picked up some chili-topped french fries and iced tea.
The house in question is Ben’s Chili Bowl on D.C.’s U Street, and “they” are Washington Mayor Adrian Fenty and a fellow from Chicago named Barack Obama who’s recently relocated to the District.
I believe I speak for everyone here (with the exception of a couple of vegetarians I know to be lurking on the premises) when I say “Yum.”

I still cannot adjust my tastebuds to the mustard-AND-chili’n'onions combo.
Chili and onions – on a burger or hotdog or smoked sausage is great. Throw in mustard (without telling me first and giving me the chance to veto it) and I will send it back to the kitchen. I don’t care if it’s tradition or not.
Yes, I once sent a chili dog back. Because they put mustard on it without indicating on the menu that mustard was included. That’s less heinous than putting mayonnaise on a grilled cheese (????) with no indication of it on the menu, but still heinous enough for me not to want to eat it.
Yes, I am a picky eater. (I presume the Obama daughters are not, or we would have heard about it before.)

FJ, once a Belgian was explaining to me that potato fries (he used some fancy word – frites?, but that what it was, essentially) are meant to be accompanied by mayonnaise. Mayo made from scratch; for those with both left hands (ahem ahem) – the ready-made store variety would do. But mayo must be present.

Except for the mustard, I’m down with that meal. We’re planning on a huge Soul Food bash/party for the Inauguration, which we hope will be televised. Because somehow our invitations to all the parties got mislaid.

mayonnaise is OK on some things, Tat (and I maintain you cannot make egg salad without it), but on grilled cheese it seems like a sin to me.
I am undecided on frites with mayonnaise. I think I would have to try it in order to decide. (I’m not a big fry fan, but the rare times I eat them I don’t even put ketchup on them)

Yeah, I’m going to have to pass on that. But hey…whatever floats your boat.
