Not as seen on Boing Boing

It’s the third annual Naked Bungy Jump for Schizophrenia:

This popular annual fundraising event has attracted supporters from all over Vancouver Island as well as Seattle, Bellingham, Whidby Island, Vancouver, Portland and as far away as Wisconsin and New York.

For this year’s event, participants are encouraged to register online in advance on the WildPlay Website starting in January 2009. Jumpers who register in advance pay only $30 while onsite registrants pay $40. Clothed participants are also welcome to take the plunge for the regular rate of $99.99. Spectators are welcome for a $15 donation.

All proceeds are donated to the BC Schizophrenia Society.

I think about the only way I’d add this to my Bucket List would be if they told me I had six months or less (six hours, more likely) to live. And actually, the garb, or lack thereof, would be a substantial advantage, since I suspect I’d lose various instances of body control once actually dangling over the abyss.

    Naked Bungy Jump for Schizophrenia

That is the most Onion-worthy idea I’ve seen all afternoon.

But that’s only because I haven’t read any political news since before lunch.

Why am I thinking of the old joke about Dolly Parton and two black eyes all of a sudden?

Bungee jumping, naked OR clothed, is on my list of “things I wouldn’t do even if they paid me.” I prefer my brain un-bruised.

Why naked bungy jumping? The BCSS has now put an explanation on it’s site:
“Why naked bungy jumping?!! The event appeals to the age group where people first begin to show symptoms of schizophrenia (under 30) and helps raise awareness among a younger thrill-enjoying audience about the need to get early treatment from a doctor for this brain illness. Naked bungy jumping is a relatively safe source of excitement, compared to street drug use that can trigger psychosis and schizophrenia. Early medical treatment for schizophrenia, as soon as symptoms first appear, has been shown to help people recover and heal faster and more completely. ”

I still wouldn’t do it. The naked part doesn’t bother me, it’s the jumping off the bridge that I can’t um.. stomach. However, I get the point of raising money for a good cause..
