Opening remarks

I’ve lived through half a century of Inaugural Addresses, from Dwight Eisenhower’s — his second, anyway — to Barack Obama’s, which gives me an opening to look back at some memorable bits from those speeches.

Very nice review. I have to agree with your take on the “lines of tribe.” Those lines have been around for centuries, and just because his Oneness wants them to dissolve seems to be justification enough to abandon positions of security and defense. I hope I’m wrong, too, but I doubt it.

If the “lines of tribe” ever do fade away they will simply be replced by other lines — of language, of faith, of mutual interest, or some other bond as yet unimagined.

If it were ever possible that this earth could be made perfect, and its inhabitants flawless, what would be the point in having it exist separate from heaven in the first place?
