An artifact from the last century

It says “1970s,” but 1969 seems to be more accurate:

I'm Glad I'm A _____

Writer/artist Whitney Darrow, Jr. had a day job as a cartoonist for The New Yorker, but it apparently never occurred to him to give one of these drawings the classic all-purpose New Yorker caption.

As for girls needing things fixed, well, where I work, should you need things fixed, you call — and sometimes beg, entreat and implore — the girl. (Even I do, and I’m pretty good at these things.)

When I look at the application of that New Yorker “all-purpose caption” I’m always thinking that about the person who put together the collection of cartoons and applied the caption to all of them. Does that still count?

I suppose if I picked up a copy of the magazine I’d probably be thinking those words even when I wasn’t looking at the cartoons…

The drawings look kind of William Steig to me, was any artist listed for them?

As for “Boys invent things,” I guess the author never heard of the brassiere? Or liquid paper? Or COBOL? Or many other things?. (Sorry, but I think my membership in AAUW carries a clause requiring me to cite things like that.)

Far as I know, Whitney Darrow, Jr. was responsible for both drawings and captions.

Whitney Darrow was the artist as well as the author?

Well, I still say the drawings look like Steig.

They do indeed look Steig-ish. (On the other hand, I don’t think Darrow ever came up with anything quite as whimsical as CDB!)
