They do indeed look Steig-ish. (On the other hand, I don’t think Darrow ever came up with anything quite as whimsical as CDB!)

Whitney Darrow was the artist as well as the author?

Far as I know, Whitney Darrow, Jr. was responsible for both drawings and captions.

The drawings look kind of William Steig to me, was any artist listed for them? As for "Boys invent things," I guess the author never heard of the brassiere? Or liquid paper? Or COBOL? Or many other things?. (Sorry, but I think my membership in AAUW carries a clause requiring me to cite things like that.)

When I look at the application of that New Yorker “all-purpose caption” I’m always thinking that about the person who put together the collection of cartoons and applied the caption to all of them. Does that still count?

I suppose if I picked up a copy of the magazine I’d probably be thinking those words even when I wasn’t looking at the cartoons…
