About five years ago, I did a post on town names that might not pass muster with our Cultural Arbiters, riffing off PETA’s attempt to persuade Slaughterville to change its name to something putatively wussy. Battiest was one of them.
I do love those “Red Tape Holds Up New Bridge” type headlines. I sometimes think reporters and editors look for opportunities to sneak them into their publications.

FYI, the town name is pronounced “Ba-TEEST”.

What’s with this sexism? Why should the gender of the batty person be stressed? I am really lost with that headline ;-)

I get it (having had students from “Ba-TEEST,” and having driven through there once with a colleague), but I laughed aloud nonetheless.

And yeah, I guess I’m insensitive because someone DID die.
