Proving the value of Taco Bell
In Riverside County, California, it’s chihuahuas 3, mountain lion 0:
Ana Lee Spray, 23, says her three chihuahuas were barking so loudly that it woke her up Saturday morning. She couldn’t figure out what was wrong, and got up to check on the dogs. When she saw the animals standing guard at the opening of the garage, Spray investigated further.
She ran into her daughter’s bedroom, which has a window that looks into the garage, and quickly got the answer staring back at her.
The chihuahuas, which weigh about three pounds each, had cornered a mountain lion. She says the big cat appeared to be angry and began hissing at her and foaming at the mouth.
“That animal! Do you think it’s mad?”
“Well, let’s say it’s not pleased.”
The pint-sized puppies refused to back off, and kept barking for about 45 minutes until two Riverside County Sheriff’s deputies arrived at Spray’s home.
“When they saw the dogs they said ‘These little things?’ When they saw the mountain lion their jaws dropped,” Spray said. “They radioed, ‘This is a full-size mountain lion and it is not happy to see us’.”
I hereby take back 49 percent of all the horrible things I’ve ever said about chihuahuas and other LFDs. People who know me will know what that means, and the rest of you will probably guess it quickly enough.

49 percent is about right – it is amazing the little suckers live as long as they do. Their overinflated opinion of their fierceness and abilities overrides their survival instincts. Those LFDs were lucky that mountain lion didn’t weary of them sooner.
Gotta give ‘em props, though.

Well, they’re not bred for ferocity. If there’s a trio of terriers about that same size going up against Priscilla Puma, I’m betting on the terriers every time.

Our dynamic terrier duo has not yet tangled with our resident mountain lion (Joaquin). But the youngest terrier was banned from the dogwalkers because he was “beating up some other dogs.” The dogs this 18 pound wonder was hassling? A lab, a Rottweiler and a pitbull mix.

Yippy little dogs…
They’re more useful than you think. Proving the value of Taco Bell, three chihuahuas corner a mountain lion….

I read somewhere that the barking of a dog will almost always tree a catamount (my preferred name for the cat has been redefined of late and I want to avoid misunderstanding). Since the incessant yapping of LFDs is often enough to send me up a tree, I’ve little reason to doubt the claim.
(And the reason for my concern over misunderstanding has thus been revealed. Heh.)

McGehee, I hope you aren’t mistaking catamount for catamite. Better call the former by its other archaic name: painter.
