    Perhaps “realism” rather than “pessimism”?

    At least, that’s how I justify my borderline-obsessive behavior re: dealing with billing agencies, banks, and bureaucracies of any sort. The reality is that things can get screwed up pretty badly, and being vigilant may save considerable agony and effort in the future on my part.
