Some idiot posted an anonymous comment to my local paper claiming to be a conservative who thinks health care is a fundamental right. I’m sorry, but there’s nothing conservative about thinking one has a “right” to something that has to be provided at someone else’s expense.

When it comes to goods and services, one has a right to buy what one does not produce, at a mutually agreed price. Period. Those who don’t like the price being asked are free to not buy if they don’t mind taking that risk.

But if health insurance is that necessary, people have to accept the possibility that it’s worth more than they’d prefer to pay for it. That’s life.

(I can go on, but the profanity content would skyrocket.)

I sent you a pretty good piece on this. I think you’ll like it.

One of the problems as I see it is “he who pays the piper calls the tune.” In other words, if the government “pays” (well, really it will be us, but that’s another point) for our health care, they will decide they have the right to dictate things to us…things we may not want dictated.

In Japan and in the UK, they have programs (either governmental or workplace) where people actually go and measure the waists of the populace. And apparently lecture at the people whose waists are “too big” by their standards.

If they want to make a 40 year old lady college prof with a Ph.D. cry in public, they hit on just the perfect way right there. (Surely the stress related to that can be as bad for one’s heart as having a waist bigger than 30″?)

Culture makes a huge difference. I’d be profoundly disappointed if any attempt to do this in America didn’t result in the waist-measurer being the one to cry in public.

I note with some amusement that President Obama has nominated a fairly chunky lady for the Surgeon General’s spot.

I noted it with some relief, I have to admit.
