We’d be a lot better off in California if all the people from the other 49 who came here would just leave. But we’ll keep the Mexicans. They are the hardest working people in show or any other business. When I’ve got grapes to pick, farm work to do, stone walls to build or any other hard manual work available, there are a line of Mexicans willing to do the job quickly, beautifully and with a smile. The people on the street with the “Will Work for Food” signs. Not so much. I’ve asked them. And when they hear I want them to pick grapes in 104 degree Sonoma sun, they say they’ll stay on their corner.

I think for Mexico’s pols the deal-breaker wouldn’t be the unbalanceable budget per se, so much as that there’s no room for a line-item for graft.

They have to promise not to give it back once they discover that they can’t balance the budget, either.
