I cordially HATE daylight time, mostly because, without regard to which direction we’re going, it screws up my sleep schedule for up to a week twice a year. I wouldn’t object to permanent DST, like some parts of Europe have, but as a purist, I have to say I favor the old-fashioned, tie-the-clock-to-local-noon method.

Re: WordPress and DST, keep in mind that it has an international scope, and thus, originally didn’t build-in DST because big chunks of the globe have nothing to do with our little clock-adjusting exercise. That said, the latest-greatest version of WP (2.8.5) does, indeed, have built-in timezones based on world cities, and syncing the blog to those will keep you current, regardless of adjustments.

Alaska ought to ditch DST altogether, and for the Lower 48 maybe what’s needed is either to go permanently to a :30 offset year-round, or shift the time zone lines so that the result, vis-a-vis “local noon” in the middle of each zone, is effectively the same.

It’s not as if the time zone boundaries follow the meridians exactly anyway.

I have no morning-person credentials, despite getting up at the hour I do. (As the Rocket Man pointed out, “It’s just my job, five days a week.”) One of the disadvantages of where I live is that my workplace is to the east, which means that there are going to be mornings when the sun is in my face on the way in, and evenings when the sun is in my face on the way out. Sometimes they’re the same day.

Not being a morning person, I think I’d take the evening sunlight. In the summer, it is absolutely fabulous to have adequate light to bike at 10:00PM (I’m somewhat south of Labrador.) In the winter, I go to work in the dark and get home in the dark, and it’s just depressing.

I don’t get everything right. (If I did, I wouldn’t be here; I’d be at the track adding to my retirement funds.)

That said, when I was getting the odd Crunch bar in my own Trick-Or-Treat sack back in the Pleistocene era, it had the apostrophe-S. And that stuff you mix with milk is properly Nestlé’s Quik, not the Newspeak-version “Nesquik,” which sounds like “Bisquick,” which makes for a different sort of breakfast altogether.

Well as far as DST goes, I obviously haven’t thought about it
enough, but I certainly will from now on.

Not sure that this matters, but since you get everything right,
I thought you might want some info so that you could decide
to make a decision.

In Nestle Crunch I don’t think you need the apostrophe S.
You do need the thing over the E. I don’t have my ASCII
guide with me, but you’ve obviously got yours.

So anyway, I just thought you might want to know that.

DST is one thing I allow myself to be a crank about. I really do not like it. (And I was all set to say that as much as I generally liked Franklin, DST was not one of his better ideas*, but I see the Internets is telling me that an ENTOMOLOGIST – maybe not quite one of my “peeps,” but close – actually proposed it. George Vernon Hudson, you are on my list. You know which one.)

(*Actually, it appears Franklin proposed people getting up earlier in summer to make use of the early daylight. I can go along with this)

Here in the Frozen North, I’d be in favour of year-round DST. In the winter, it would give me a bit of twilight instead of darkness at the end of the day, and sunlight till tennish in the summer. (Don’t get a lot of natural light at work). I agree that the changover is a PITA.

Guess it also depends on what time you get up, whether extra light in the morning is important or not.

Yesterday’s sunrise, the latest of the year no thanks to the distended DST, was 7:49 am. Like we lived in freaking Labrador or something.

I get to work around 6:30 am. Which means I’m driving in the dark for nine months out of the year. (Earliest sunrise we ever have is around 6:15 CDT.) I find little to like about that situation.

No one on the far side of the door expressed a preference, but the stuff I had the least of at the end was the new “Crisp” version of the Butterfinger bar, which features some sort of wafer slid in between the existing peanut-butter-and-whatever mix. Also in the mix: Milky Way; Nestlé’s Crunch; M&Ms. Most of the goblins were given two nonmatching items each.

And what I hate about DST is the bogosity of it: no one with half a brain seriously believes that it does a damn thing for energy conservation, but still we go through the motions, twice a year. Either they should make it year-round, or they should get rid of it altogether.

I don’t like DST and would be extremely sad if we went to it year ’round. I seem to remember hearing in the 70s the only reason we didn’t (because, ostensibly, DST saves energy, but I have never seen stats that convinced me) was that too many little kids would have to wait for the bus in the dark.

Some 30-35 years later, in the “extended” DST, this former little kid is having to drive to work in the dark and isn’t any happier about it. I’d rather have it get light at 5 am in the summer than have it be dark until 7:30 am in the fall.

I would like it better if it were full-time: it would still reek of artifice and such, but there'd be no adjustment period twice a year. So far, I've had five outside pieces here, one of which was actually recycled from 1989; the last one appeared in early 2006.
