Not teetering
You know, it’s really not absolutely necessary to wear some monstrously high heel, even if (1) you’re an actress, (2) you’re at a Hollywood premiere, and (3) you’re known for, among other things, a better-than-decent pair of gams.
And I’m not about to demand an explanation from Susan Sarandon, either:
[Sarandon] looked glowing as she attended the U.S. premiere of The Lovely Bones at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.
But, after wearing towering heels at the world opening in London last month, she slipped on a pair of comfy blue flats.
It had the unfortunate effect of making the 5ft 7in actress appear a little flat-footed and failed to match the rest of her sexy-at-63 look.
Well, they’re not exactly ballet flats, which are considered semi-trendy these days, but maybe you have to be Sofia Coppola to pull that off. Me, I might grumble about the color — it doesn’t really go with the dress — but I would argue that at this age, if you don’t do as you damn well please, there’s something seriously wrong.

Some would say shoes the EXACT color of the dress would be too matchy-matchy and very uncool. (Like the Barbie outfits that used to be hawked to us as kids.)
At least she didn’t resort to a Cybill Shepherd and wear running shoes.

Complementary blues of varying brightness are fine; this particular blue struck me as having a bit too much grey mixed in. (As always, your mileage may vary.) A solid grey, were it light enough, might have worked.

Of course, I must bow to your superior knowledge of shoe-ology. Me? If they aren’t Minnetonka moccasins, Tevas, running shoes or hiking boots, I’m not wearing them.

I’m getting close to that age and I do as I damn well please… even if means wearing white socks with black crocs.
And don’t you dare tell me that’s not stylish. After all, I’m wearing black sweats with a white t-shirt! Totally color-coordinated.

I think you’re right on the color, Chaz.
At 5’10″, I’ve never felt the need to wear spike heels unless held at gunpoint (never happened) or paid to wear them (happened occasionally). I think Ms. Sarandon looks lovely. Critics should consider that she’s smiling so charmingly because her feet don’t hurt. I’m 62 and at this late date, you will never catch me in heels hugher than two inches.

This photo from a related event seems to make it clear that this isn’t just a random act of fashion.
