    Among other things, the man made an art form of not calling attention to himself; not even Thomas Pynchon — who actually showed up on The Simpsons, albeit with a bag drawn over his head — was in Salinger’s league, reticence-wise.

    I liked his style in that — he let his work stand on its merits. I, for one shall miss him.

    Yet he was the worst kind of phony. He repeatedly lured teenage girls into his orbit, seduced them and abandoned them. Joyce Maynard was one who famously wrote about it.
