(Found at MSN Autos last night; reformatted for narrower screens.) Update, 8:30 am: This shot was taken by Steve Gooch for the Oklahoman:
Dayum. Posted at 6:02 AM to Family JoulesNashville area is right around that nat'l avg, having collapsed by over 20 cents in a week. The state is all over the map (pun intended) as I wrote a couple of days ago during a drive cross-state. Posted by: Winston at 6:48 AM on 22 September 2006I scored some premium for $2.319 Wednesday evening; they were selling the low-suds stuff for around $2.10. Lowest I've seen here has been $2.03ish. I'm going to take a risk and report a sighting of $2.189 here in Coweta last night. The two usual suspects for low-price regular had been caught flat-footed by a third, more-than-occasional-but-no-longer-usual suspect. As for the onetime low-proce leader by the interstate, they were lagging on the price drops for a while but the slightly-more-expensive station across the road has been nipping at their heels and lately they've been comparable with the usuals. Meanwhile, a station with a car wash has a "with car wash" price of under $2.10, according to my wife. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if some people are semi-boycotting until the "one" appears left of the decimal point. Posted by: McGehee at 7:44 AM on 22 September 2006In Iowa, mid-grade is actually cheaper than regular. It has 10% ethanol in it. I was up there a couple of weeks ago, and I filled up with mid grade the whole time. It was great. Posted by: Steven Roemerman at 8:06 AM on 22 September 2006An Iowan chiming in here -- that Lawler price is low even for us. We've been running arount $2.09 to $2.14 a gallon, which is a vast improvement over even six weeks ago. Posted by: Kirk Leggott at 8:23 AM on 22 September 2006Yup. Paid $1.969 this morning. My wife and I were trying to remember the last time it was below $2. Yay! Posted by: Bobbert at 9:26 AM on 22 September 2006I didn't see any gas that cheap on my recent drive through Iowa. The cheapest that I found on the entire journey was $2.05 west of St. Louis. Posted by: Bayou at 10:49 AM on 22 September 2006Who'da thunk we'd be all excited about $1.96 gasoline??? Back in the Pleistocene Era (sometime around 1977, I think, I was paying 33 cents or so a gallon. My '71 Super Beetle could fill up for $3.30. My kids just roll their eyes when I mention that. Posted by: John Owen Butler at 1:13 PM on 22 September 2006The current MSN screen shows $1.819 at Spring Valley, Minnesota. All the Iowa stuff is padded liberally with ethanol. Posted by: Jennifer at 2:39 PM on 22 September 2006Probably Minnesota's, too. (I bought some 90-10 last time I was up there.) 1.99 at 7-11 (NW 50th & Portland, OKC) ... Where was that 1.96? :) Posted by: Ron at 5:02 PM on 22 September 2006Yeah, I remember buying gas as cheap as $.29 a gallon. Of course that was back when I was earning $90 a week. Here around Milwaukee regular ranges around $2.35 to $2.39 a gallon. One block away from the Illinois state line, where the competition has less tax in their price, I saw $2.29. Wouldn't be surprised if they were violating Wisconsin's minimum markup law. As for that ethanol cut, with a job wherein we fill the tank every day and sometimes drive outside the formulated zone, we confirmed a 5% increase in fuel economy if the gasoline hasn't been stepped on. Posted by: triticale at 7:08 PM on 22 September 2006The Oklahoman didn't say where they got the photo, and I don't recognize the streetscape (what little there is of it). As I understand it, ethanol has lower energy density but higher octane, so I suspect one's results may be at least somewhat contingent upon the engine computer's expectation. I don't have enough experience with the stuff myself, but I didn't see any decline in mileage during my Midwestern trip, two years and one car ago. |
