24 September 2006Virtual library indexIf I ever have time to key in a thousand or so titles and authors, I, too, can be part of the LibraryThing. So far, they have 82,000 members and 5.9 million books, which is about six dozen books per member; while there are the usual vast numbers of extremely popular titles some 6,000 folks report each of the Harry Potter books over 1.2 million titles are listed as "unique." I'd be tempted to join just to see that list. (With thanks to Jennifer, in whose Margin Notes I found the link, and David, who made the following rash statement: "The title of [this] post is pretty cool because it starts with the letter V and ends with the letter X. Tell me where you can find any other entry on any other blog with THAT spiffy feature! Uh-huh, I thought not.") Posted at 6:24 PM to Entirely Too CoolI tried to go there, but I get parsing errors in Firefox 1.5.0.7. It sounds like something my wife would love, as she is an unemployed but job-seeking librarian at the moment. Posted by: Dan at 7:31 PM on 24 September 2006Six dozen books? Pikers. I've got 100 dozen books tracked in my (non-LibraryThing) software, and that's only the books I've read. I've probably got that many again in the library that I haven't read. And that's not counting what Mrs. Brian J. or Little Brian J., Jr., have in their libraries. Posted by: Brian J. at 9:34 PM on 24 September 2006I am duly humbled. Posted by: Mister Snitch! at 10:34 PM on 24 September 2006Actually, I went a few minutes into "virulent anthrax" research before deciding this was both easier and less contrived-looking. I haven't begun to make an accurate count of the books around here, but I think the low four figures is probably close to the mark; I am reasonably certain it's a bit smaller than the world-renowned Noggle Library. Come to think of it, I'm betting post titles that begin with X and end with V would be even rare, were it not for things like carnivals... Posted by: McGehee at 7:54 AM on 25 September 2006Heh. Which reminds me, I really should update my LibraryThing account with more books. There are some nifty features in there. I like looking at other users' libraries--particularly through books that I only share with one or two other users. Posted by: sya at 10:16 PM on 26 September 2006 |
