19 October 2006Quote of the weekSenator John McCain (R-AZ) on the possibility of the Democrats retaking the Senate:
I think I'd just commit suicide.
If you can drum up enough press coverage, John, you might be able to pass it off as martyrdom. (From a Wonkette link dump.) Posted at 11:38 AM to QOTWSurprising. He's usually such a fence-straddler. Posted by: Mister Snitch! at 12:45 PM on 19 October 2006I have doubts that McCain actually said that. It would be like him saying that a Democrat-controlled Congress would be worse than being in a Vietnam POW camp. McCain is not known for excessive hyperbole like that. Posted by: Dan B at 1:05 PM on 19 October 2006Well, the original Radio Iowa item characterizes the line as having been "jokingly" said, and, well, nothing enhances a joke quite like excessive hyperbole. I think McCain has given most of America a good reason to vote Democratic. Posted by: Brad at 4:20 PM on 19 October 2006As long as McCain gets to present himself as a heroic figure, I doubt he cares much who controls the Senate. The Republicans will hold the Senate, BTW. I heard he once said not too long ago that what happens at Gitmo is worse than what he endured at the Hanoi Hilton. Posted by: McGehee at 10:12 PM on 19 October 2006 |
