3 October 2006Random bytesComputer-related stuff that's been on my mind of late:
I don't know if this will end up as another series. Yet. Posted at 6:18 AM to PEBKACThere was a time when Lotus Notes would run in a small memory footprint, but the horrendous code bloat of both Notes and the operating systems it runs on now means 512 MB is pretty much a minimum, and you'll be happier with 1 GB. Fortunately, memory prices have come down enough that this isn't too painful to do for most clients. I tried to buy a 1GB stick to upgrade my bugbox, but the price difference between it and a 512 MB stick was about $100, meaning the additional half-gig on the 1GB stick was more expensive than the single half-gig on the 512 MB stick. Whatever happened to volume pricing? Posted by: McGehee at 9:17 AM on 3 October 2006Regarding the podcast - it's almost too obvious to write. Sometimes when you're talking into the mic, you think, "Is ANYONE listening? Does ANYONE like this drivel?" So writing an encouraging email can't hurt. (In case you're wondering, I do a podcast for my employer. Haven't started a personal one yet) Posted by: Dan at 1:24 PM on 3 October 2006Are you talking about the Ugly Girls? We are migrating over to our new site (www.uglygirlsclub.com) and won't be up and running (although we are currently producing podcasts soon to be published) until the middle of October when I am on fall break and have a chance to get this thing going. smooches, your biggest fan, Dr. Jan Posted by: Dr. Jan at 10:19 PM on 3 October 2006"I'd still like to find a way to record CD-Rs at slower speeds than offered by my software. (Yeah, I know: get new software.)" Yes, get new software. I believe Toast offers what you're looking for (and I understand Toast is cheap these days - someone told me $20 recently but I didn't confirm it). Or get a Mac. The slower speed options are built-in. Posted by: Mister Snitch! at 12:48 AM on 4 October 2006 |
