20 December 2006The Big 93 Jocks are on the moveRadio Use Only is dedicated to LP records issued by radio stations, usually a collection of whatever recent hits could be licensed, with photos of the DJs or other local angle. I actually have a couple of these, and I've got one I need to scan and write up, from right across town at WKY. No, you can't buy any of them at least, not from her. I gather that also includes special tracks referencing the local market, such as the one Atlanta's country stations had a couple of years back, of Terri Clark's "I Want It All," in which she wants to watch the 'Dawgs, rather than the Yankees, play ball. Posted by: McGehee at 9:48 AM on 20 December 2006In later years, this became the norm for radio-station LPs, though LPs by then were slouching toward extinction. I recollect having heard Sacramento versions as early as the late '70s, which I suppose might have been an early manifestation -- perhaps because of Tower Records, d'you suppose? Posted by: McGehee at 3:27 PM on 20 December 2006That KAKC Solid Gold album was from 1969; there's a page about it on the Tulsa TV Memories site with comments from morning man Lee Bayley. Posted by: Michael Bates at 3:59 PM on 20 December 2006I think it's at least possible that Tower, given its clout, kicked in a few marketing dollars in exchange for exclusive rights to carry the record. I remember picking up a KTSA (San Antonio) LP (with a mock-Cheap Thrills sleeve, which I've long since lost) from a G. C. Murphy store in Austin. Hey all - I was clued into your thread about the site-- many thanks for the mention, and thanks for the info. I add new LPs almost every month (adding 14 new ones after the holidays), plus I'll also be adding a "for sale and trade" page--so yeah, I will be finding homes for a few of these (my duplicates). Thanks again, -Lisa Posted by: Lisa at 6:27 PM on 20 December 2006 |
