26 February 2007Make that to goDave Thomas' original Wendy's Old Fashioned Hamburgers, 257 East Broad Street in Columbus, Ohio, will close this Friday after years of so-so sales. Wendy's #1 opened in November 1969. The main problem, apparently, is that downtown Columbus closes at sunset, and the store does no business at night. Worse, there's very little parking, and there's no room to put in a drive-thru. (Wendy's #2, opened a year later, does have a drive-thru.) There are plenty of Wendy's locations in and around Columbus, and all the staff of #1 will be offered jobs at other stores; the accumulated memorabilia will be relocated to Wendy's HQ in nearby Dublin. (Side note: The largest city in the US without a Wendy's is San Francisco. Go figure.) Among other firsts:
I definitely picked a lousy day to skip breakfast. How about McDonalds first Drive-Thru window? According to several books on McDonalds (including Ray Kroc's), it was right here in Oklahoma City. They opened the first drive-thru at the 39th street location in 1975. It closed within the past few years and is now a used car lot. A couple of other places in the United States claim this for themselves, but I trust Ray Kroc. The Encyclopedia Of Company Histories (available free for many companies through answers.com) also says McDonalds first drive-thru was in Oklahoma City. Indeed I do remember seeing billboard signs in SLC advertising the "Harman cafe" with Col. Sanders' likeness on them, back when I was very little. For a while I thought the colonel's first name was Harman, nor Harlan. Only later did I learn that Harman was somebody else. Posted by: McGehee at 1:43 PM on 26 February 2007I love this post. My first real job was at our local KFC, a take-out only "company store". Started on my 16th birthday and stayed until I left for college. Good times. I've been to the one in Corbin, KY, too. Not very exciting, but I've been. Posted by: Jennifer at 3:55 PM on 26 February 2007Taco Mayo #1 was across the street from Norman High School. Now the location is a Starbucks, with Taco Mayo #1 catty-corner from Norman Regional Hospital. Betcha didn't know that, or cared. Posted by: Dan B at 3:56 PM on 26 February 2007Poor Taco Mayo. They aren't exactly a hot franchise these days. It's still based in South Oklahoma City off of South Penn. They only have ten stores located out of the state of Oklahoma. Tough competition in that segment of the fast food biz. Posted by: MikeSwi... at 7:30 PM on 26 February 2007 |
