Eat here and get gas

Well, not anymore: the gas stations along the Turner Turnpike will shut down on the 23rd, leaving the two "service plazas" with a place to eat, but no actual motor fuel.

A spokesman for the turnpike said that the station operator declined to renew the lease on the two stations.

It is possible to exit at Bristow — I've done this — and gas up, then return to the turnpike; presumably it's possible at Wellston. There is no apparent rush to sign up a new operator for the stations.

They were both pretty much rat-holes if I remember correctly. It's getting so that I NEVER want to stop at someplace right on the turnpike. I would much rather get off the bob-sled track and mosey into town for a nicer bathroom, cheaper gas, & nicer folks.

I agree with Dwayne. Why choke down a Quarter Pounder at the W. E. "Bill" Hoback Service Area when you can enjoy a patty melt on marble rye at the Rock Cafe in Stroud.

There's a big gas station on 66 at Wellston just west of I-44. It has a Subway, so it will still be possible, with a little effort, to eat and get gas there.

Wellston is a full exit now. It was not an exit at all for many years, then for a long time it was a half-exit with the difficult-to-parse sign "NO EASTBOUND ON RAMP." (What part of speech is ON in that phrase?)

And heading Westbound at Wellston, you can pull into the McDonald's and walk 50 yards over to the Subway.

Oh, and the Will Rogers Museum in the McD's? a joke & an insult to the man.
