The National Motorists Association, just in time for Memorial Day, has issued its list of the Top Ten speed traps in the US. If you're going through any of these areas, you might want to keep a closer watch on the speedometer — and on the rear-view mirror:

  1. Detroit, Michigan suburbs
  2. Colorado Springs, Colorado
  3. Houston, Texas
  4. Orlando, Florida
  5. Nashville, Tennessee
  6. Ann Arbor, Michigan
  7. Albuquerque, New Mexico
  8. Washington, D.C.
  9. Denver, Colorado
  10. Virginia Beach, Virginia

Statistics are based on the contributions of individual users to the NMA's SpeedTrap Exchange.

The original Autoextremist, Peter M. DeLorenzo, looks at the very top of that list and notes:

The whole state is filled with radar-totin' revenue generators who are on monthly ticket quotas, so beware. Especially if you're driving through Birmingham, MI.

It does seem a bit scary that two of the Top Ten are in Michigan.

I had no idea anyone compiled such rankings. I had no idea that we in Nashville had achieved such a lofty No. 5 ranking. We promise to work harder to become No.1.

Around Music City, the biggest problem is the bozo cowboys who ride motorcycles and wear badges. They have zero sense of humor. I've been told by regular police guys that they don't even like the motorcycle cops.

Number two on the list does not surprise me at all. We took a long leisurely drive in the mountains yesterday and the cops had someone pulled over every 20 miles. I saw more police officers on one stretch of highway then I have fingers on both hands. It was too much.
