Hrm, I wonder, is there any significance, or only coincidence, that World Naked Gardening Day is also Mexican Independence Day (Cinco de Mayo)?

Hm... we've had poison ivy in the back yard. Think I'll pass up today's festivities.

I don't think there's any connection to the Battle of Puebla; the first WNGD was in September, as was the second. I suspect they moved it to spring to take advantage of a presumably-higher interest in gardening than exists in fall. (Which suggests that it's primary a Northern Hemisphere movement, come to think of it.)
